UNDERSTANDING DEPRESSION

Depression Is More Than Feeling Sad — And It Responds to the Right Treatment

"Depression doesn't always look like crying. Sometimes it looks like staying in bed, canceling plans, or just going through the motions — numb to the life around you."

Clinical depression is one of the most common — and most treatable — mental health conditions. Yet millions of Californians go without care because of cost, stigma, long waitlists, or simply not knowing where to start.

Our telehealth individual therapy model removes every one of those barriers. You get one-on-one time with a licensed therapist who truly gets to know you, treatment grounded in decades of clinical research, and the flexibility to show up for yourself from wherever you are — all through your existing insurance plan.

SIGNS & SYMPTOMS

How to Recognize Depression

Depression shows up differently in every person. You may be living with depression if you experience any of the following, most days, for two weeks or longer:

Persistent Low Mood

Feeling sad, empty, or hopeless that doesn’t lift with time or distraction

Changes in Sleep

Sleeping too much, waking early, or lying awake with a racing mind

Negative Self-Talk

Harsh inner critic, excessive guilt, feelings of worthlessness or shame.

Loss of Interest

Things you once loved — hobbies, relationships, food — no longer bring pleasure.

Difficulty Concentrating

Brain fog, forgetfulness, and trouble making decisions at work or home

Physical Symptoms

Unexplained aches, appetite changes, or slowed movement and speech.

Fatigue and Low Energy

Exhaustion that sleep doesn’t fix, making even small tasks feel overwhelming.

Withdrawal & Isolation

Pulling back from friends, family and social connection — even when lonely

If you recognize yourself here, you're not weak — you're experiencing a medical condition. And you deserve real support.

WHY INDIVIDUAL THERAPY WORKS

The Power of One-on-One Therapy for Depression

Individual therapy gives you something rare: a dedicated, confidential space that belongs entirely to you. No agenda but your own. Research consistently shows that individual psychotherapy produces significant, lasting reductions in depression — and here's why it works so well:

1. Treatment built around you — not a template

Your depression has its own history, its own shape. Individual therapy allows your therapist to deeply understand your specific patterns, relationships, and triggers and tailor every session to where you actually are.

2. A therapeutic relationship that itself heals

Decades of research point to the therapeutic alliance — the bond between you and your therapist — as one of the strongest predictors of recovery. Individual therapy lets that relationship deepen over time.

3. Full privacy to go as deep as you need

Individual therapy creates a completely confidential space where you can explore shame, trauma, grief, or fear without holding back.

4. Pace and focus that follows your needs

Had a hard week? Your therapist can pivot. Made a breakthrough? You can go deeper. Individual sessions are responsive in real time — the session belongs to you.

5. Lasting tools for life beyond the session

The goal is equipping you with self-awareness, coping skills, and emotional resilience to navigate life with less suffering and more agency, long after therapy ends.

COST & INSURANCE

We Accept Major California Insurance Plans

We believe financial barriers should never stand between someone and mental health care. That's why we work directly with major insurance providers so that therapy is covered — often at little or no out-of-pocket cost.

We accept many plans including United Healthcare, Aetna, Cigna and Medi-Cal. Our intake team will verify your specific benefits before your first session, so there are no surprises.

No insurance? We offer a sliding scale fee for self-pay clients. Cost should never be the reason you don't get help. Contact us to discuss options.

OUR CLINICAL APPROACH

Evidence-Based Therapy, Delivered With Compassion

Our therapists don't believe in a one-size-fits-all model. We draw on the most well-researched, effective modalities for depression — and integrate them thoughtfully into your individual treatment plan.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

Identify and reshape the thought patterns that feed depression.

Interpersonal Therapy (IPT)

Address relationship patterns and life transitions that contribute to low mood.

Mindfulness-Based Approaches

Develop present-moment awareness to reduce rumination and emotional reactivity.

ACT (Acceptance & Commitment)

Build psychological flexibility and reconnect with your values despite depression.

Psychodynamic Therapy

Explore how past experiences and unconscious patterns shape your present mood.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Frequently Asked Questions

Is online individual therapy as effective as in-person therapy for depression?

Yes. Multiple peer-reviewed studies confirm that telehealth therapy produces outcomes equivalent to in-person care for depression. Many clients find the online format easier to maintain consistently — which is one of the strongest predictors of improvement.

How do I know if I'll be a good fit with my therapist?

We take matching seriously. Our intake process gathers information about your preferences, goals, and background so we can pair you thoughtfully. If the fit isn't right after a few sessions, we'll help you transition to another therapist — no pressure, no judgment.

How often will I meet with my therapist?

Most clients begin with weekly 53-minute sessions. Your therapist will work with you to determine the right frequency based on your needs, goals, and insurance plan.

What if I'm in crisis or need more intensive support?

Individual therapy is not a crisis service. If you are in immediate danger, please call or text 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline). Our team can also help you coordinate a higher level of care, including intensive outpatient programs, if that's what you need.

Do I need a diagnosis to start therapy?

Not necessarily. Our clinicians conduct a brief intake assessment to understand what you're experiencing. If you're struggling with depression symptoms — even without a formal diagnosis — we encourage you to reach out.

Is telehealth therapy legal and confidential in California?

Yes. Telehealth therapy is fully legal in California and regulated by the same professional and ethical standards as in-person care. All sessions are conducted over HIPAA-compliant, encrypted video platforms.
